Raku is a firing technique which was originally and mainly used for the Japanese
tea ceremony The kiln, of course, plays an important role. In this course each
participant will build a small raku kiln out of an IKEA rubbish bin. This kiln,
fired with wood, is a simple and inexpensive alternative to the more normal gas
and electric raku kilns. The whole process from forming to raku firing can be
directly and personally experienced in schools and in studios.
Course leader:
Stefan Jakob has run a ceramic course studio "Ceramics & Animation" in Zurich since 1995. As a social education worker and handcrafts teacher he has many years of experience in giving courses. His
specialities are firing in open fires and building the simplest of kilns.

31.8. evening (arrive and get acquainted) until 2.9.2010

Number of Participants: 17 to 25
Costs:
150.- euros for kalkspatz members and 170.- euros for non-members, including
kiln building materials and wood fuel. (we have used sponsor money to keep the
costs of this course so unusually low)
Contents: - the glazing and firing of brought along ceramic objects and tea bowls.
- the building of a raku kiln and raku tongs.
- raku firing in one's own kiln.
Lodging: possible in Broellin with the same conditions as for the conference.
Provisions: can also be booked in Broellin; three meals a day cost 15.- euros.
The bookings take place informally through kalkspatz.

The normal participant regulations for kalkspatz seminars apply. The registration is binding upon payment.
The seminar can only be booked together with the Wood Fire Conference!
Stefan Jakob will also be demonstrating his raku firings during the conference.
